Scars

Scars are areas in the skin that appear when damaged skin is replaced by connective tissue. Because the composition of connective tissue differs from the normal tissue, it remains visible. If the damage is superficial or only affects the epidermis, there will be no scars.

In general, scars do not cause symptoms. Some people, however, opt for treatment for cosmetic reasons. Scars may also itch, irritate or become hard. It is also possible that a scar limits the movement of a particular joint.

Although scars can be treated surgically, this method is often expensive and can be painful. Silicon therapy is usually regarded as a better treatment. Moisturising creams and gels can also be effective for healing small and recent scars.
