Zyloric tablets contain the active ingredient allopurinol, a type of medicine that inhibits the conversion of purine (a substance found in high-protein foods, amongst other things) into uric acid. The excess of uric acid in the blood can cause a number of health problems, such as gout and kidney stones. Zyloric lowers the level of uric acid in the body and, in doing so, helps prevent or reduce symptoms associated with these conditions.

What is Zyloric?
Zyloric tablets contain the active ingredient allopurinol, a type of medicine that inhibits the conversion of purine (a substance found in high-protein foods, amongst other things) into uric acid. The excess of uric acid in the blood can cause a number of health problems, such as gout and kidney stones. Zyloric lowers the level of uric acid in the body and, in doing so, helps prevent or reduce symptoms associated with these conditions.
What is it used for?
Zyloric is prescribed for gout, a condition that causes swelling and pain in the joints, mainly wrists, ankles, knees and big toes. Gout results from crystals of uric acid depositing in the joints, causing them to become inflamed. Zyloric is also used to treat other disorders that are the result of a build-up of uric acid, such as kidney stones and other kidney problems.
How to use Zyloric
Zyloric tablets should be taken with some liquid, preferably with or directly after meals. In most cases, Zyloric needs be taken for a longer period of time to prevent gout attacks. It can take up to several months before the effect is noticeable, so do not stop taking Zyloric early. Zyloric could initially worsen the gout symptoms. Treatment with Zyloric should therefore not be started if you have just had an attack. In this case, you should wait several weeks before you start to take this medicine.
Dosage
Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose for adults and children aged 15 and above is:
- Depending on the severity of the symptoms, 100 to 900 mg a day, administered in one or more doses.
The duration of the treatment is decided by the doctor. Consult your doctor about giving this medicine to small children.

Zyloric may have side effects, although not everyone gets them. The most commonly reported side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and/or vomiting (usually only temporary).
- Diarrhea.
- Skin rash due to allergic reaction.

Alcohol may impact the effectiveness of Zyloric. It is therefore important to reduce your alcohol intake or stop altogether while taking it.
