Zomig

Zomig, sometimes called by the generic term "Zolmitriptan" is a migraine relieving medication that's intended to support patients suffering from headache pain. In some cases, Zomig can help to reduce the other symptoms that are often associated with migraines outside of pain too, including sensitivity to sound and light, vomiting, nausea, and general discomfort. The active ingredient in this drug works by helping to expand the blood vessels in the human brain. Experts believe that expanding or widening the blood vessels can reduce some of the throbbing pain and pressure associated with migraine headaches. Zolmitriptan is just one option in a range of drugs known commonly as triptans. These substances impact the serotonin in the brain which cause the narrowing of blood vessels and general discomfort. This medication will not prevent migraines from taking place, nor will it lessen the number of migraines that you might experience. However, taking this medication at the onset of a migraine attack could reduce the symptoms.

Zomig tablets are a medication used for the treatment of migraines and headache pain. These pills contain a single active ingredient called Zolmitriptan, which is a form of medication approved for relieving some of the discomfort caused by migraine attacks.

When is Zomig used?

Zomig is prescribed by doctors to people who suffer from regular migraine attacks. Crucially, having a migraine isn't the same as having a standard headache. If you just have headaches with no other migraine symptoms, then you may need a different kind of treatment. Migraine headaches are a type of pain that involve severe and often debilitating pain - generally in one side of the head.

As well as causing severe head pain, migraines can also be accompanied by other symptoms, such as vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to sound and light. At the onset of a migraine, some people experience something called an aura, which causes them to see colours, flashing lights, or patterns in front of their vision. A migraine episode can last for anywhere up to 7 days at a time.

How do you use Zomig?

Before you begin taking any new medication including Zomig, it's important to speak to your doctor and read the patient leaflet included with your new drug. Zomig is usually available in two forms. You can find this medication either as a typical table, or as an orodispersable tablet. If you get the second option, then the substance will dissolve quickly in your mouth, and shouldn't need to be swallowed. You will need to take this pill at the first sign of an oncoming migraine headache for it to have the best outcomes. If you wait for too long, then your symptoms may not improve.

If you take Zomig and continue to have symptoms after two hours, then you may be able to take another tablet. However, if your symptoms don't improve after this second pill, do not continue to take any more Zomig without contacting your doctor. Your healthcare provider and the medical leaflet included with your pills will tell you how much Zomig you can take.

To take the disintegrating tablet, use your hands to peel the foil packaging on the tablet back and place it on your tongue. If you are taking the regular tablet, then you will be able to take it as normal with a glass of water.

What dosages are there?

Usually, your doctor will prescribe a dose of one 2.5 mg tablet at the onset of your migraine headache. If your doctor prescribes a 5mg tablet, then you may need to break it in half. Do not take more than 5mg of Zomig at any given time. Do not take more than two tablets in a 24 hour period.

If you take Zomig more often than you are told to by your doctor, then you may find that your migraines begin to worsen or start to happen more frequently. Do not take any medication for headaches including Zomig for any more than five days in total each month. You will need to speak to your doctor again if you use Zomig to treat 3 headaches or more in a single one month period. Ask your doctor what to do next if your symptoms do not improve.

What are the side effects of Zomig?

While most people will respond positively to Zomig, all substances including this one can have negative side effects. It's important to familiarize yourself with the possible outcomes of taking Zomig, so you're prepared for what might happen when you begin using the medication. Remember that your doctor will have assessed the risk of any side effects before prescribing this pill to you.

The most common symptoms of Zomig include dry mouth, nausea, weakness, dizziness and drowsiness. If those effects happen or get a lot worse over a short period of time, then it might be a good idea to speak to your doctor or pharmacist to find out whether you should continue taking Zomig. There's also a chance that this substance could increase your blood pressure. Your doctor may ask you to keep a close eye on your blood pressure to ensure that it doesn't get out of control. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any serious side effects that indicate a problem with your blood pressure, such as cold feet and hands, or blue fingers or toes.

Zomig can occasional cause side effects that include tightness or pain in the jaw, neck or chest. You may also find that you feel a sense of pressure - although this isn't always serious. However, these symptoms could also be symptoms of a heart attack. If you notice an irregular or fast heartbeat, pain in your stomach, loss of consciousness, or diarrhea with blood, then you should get emergency help straight away from a hospital or healthcare provider.

In some cases, Zomig can increase your serotonin level and rarely lead to a condition that is very serious called serotonin toxicity. The risk of getting this condition will increase if you are taking other drugs that include some serotonin or improve your ability to absorb serotonin. Signs that you could be experiencing this kind of side effect include an unexplained fever, twitching muscles, and unusual feelings of restlessness or agitation.

It is very rare to have a serious allergic reaction to Zomig, however, you should always seek medical attention immediately if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, including swelling or rashes around the face, tongue, throat, and other regions of the body. You should also contact a doctor if you have trouble breathing or feelings of dizziness.

When shouldn't you use Zomig?

While Zomig is a suitable migraine treatment for many people, it won't be suitable for everyone. Before you begin taking this substance, tell your pharmacist or doctor if you are allergic to the active ingredient, or if you have any other allergies that could be exacerbated by the inactive ingredients in the pill. You should also check that you are suitable to take this pill by running through your medical history with your doctor. If you have every had a history of blood circulation problems, or certain types of rare headache, then this could be the wrong treatment for you.

Zomig is not suitable for people who suffer from heart problems, chest pain, or previous heart attacks. You may need to avoid these pills if you have ever had a seizure, stroke, hempilegic migraines or liver disease. Certain conditions can also increase your chances of having heart problems with Zomig, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease. If you do have a higher risk of heart problems than the average patient, then your doctor might need you to have an exam before you begin taking this medication.

If you have had heart conditions before, then you may need to take Zomig for the first time in your doctor's office or clinic so that they can monitor your reaction to the medication. Remember, you should not use this, or any other migraine medicate on for more than a few days at a time, or this could cause your condition to worsen.

Does Zomig interact with any other medications?

Zomig can interact poorly with some other medications, so it's important to be aware of any potential interactions before you begin taking it. Speak to your doctor about any drugs that you are already taking before you begin using Zomig, this includes any over-the-counter medications or substances that were not prescribed to you by a medical professional.

For example taking MAO inhibitor medications with this type of drug can cause very serious drug interactions. You should not take any MAO inhibitors when you are enduring treatment with this medication. Ask your doctor whether you should stop taking any other pills before you take Zomig.

Your risk of serotonin syndrome and toxicity will also increase if you're also taking other drugs that increase serotonin. You might also have a higher risk if you're taking certain antidepressants like fluoxetine, or natural substances like St John's Wort. There are other drugs that also interact and this needs to be checked before taking.

If you are taking any ergotamine medications at the same time as Zomig, then you will need to separate your dose from these other drugs to ensure that your side effect risk is kept to an absolute minimum.
