Pro-Banthine

Pro-Banthine is a tablet prescribed to people with muscle spasm issues in the bladder and gut. This medication contains the active ingredient propantheline, which is a substance that helps to relax the smooth muscle in the body to reduce issues like pain, excessive sweating and even involuntary urination.

What are Pro-Banthine tablets?

Pro-Banthine is a form of anti-spasmodic medication designed to reduce the spasming and pain in the muscles inside the bladder and gut. Using the active ingredient propantheline, Pro-Banthine can relax a specific kind of muscle in the stomach called the “smooth muscle”. As a secondary effect, Pro-Banthine can also reduce excessive and involuntary sweating.

Pro-Banthine is a prescription-only medication that should not be taken without a medical consultation first. This treatment is intended for a wide range of conditions, but it will not be suitable for all patients. If Pro-Banthine is not right for you, then your consultant may be able to suggest an alternative.

What are Pro-Banthine tablets used for?

Pro-Banthine can either be used on its own or in combination with other medications for the treatment of several conditions. The substance works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the gut and bladder to treat disorders caused by muscle spasms, such as irritable bowel syndrome and incontinence or involuntary urination. The Pro-Banthine active ingredient, propantheline can also reduce secretions like sweat, which means that it may also be used for the treatment of a medical condition called hyperhidrosis.

People with hyperhidrosis often sweat unpredictably and uncontrollably from their feet, palms, underarms and other areas. Often this condition may make it harder for a person to exercise. Pro-Banthine sweating can also be prescribed for people who have sweating issues after eating and drinking. This is known as gustatory sweating and is often associated with conditions such as diabetes. Pro-Banthine hyperhidrosis treatment can work alongside other medications to treat peptic ulcers and reduce the release of acid in the stomach. In certain cases, your doctor may also prescribe Pro-Banthine to prevent bedwetting or enuresis in adults.

How to use Pro-Banthine tablets to treat spasms in the stomach muscles

Before starting any new treatment, make sure that you read the instructions that are printed on the manufacturer’s label inside of the packet. Check the instructions when getting each new packet of pills in case anything has changed since your last treatment. The patient leaflet in your medication will also provide you with more information about the side effects that can occur when you are taking Pro-Banthine and what you can do about them. (The patient leaflet is attached in a link below)

Take the advice given by your consultant into account when using Pro-Banthine. It is common to take this medication on an empty stomach, usually either one hour before you eat a meal or two hours after. You will need to swallow the tablets provided with a glass of water. Ensuring that you do not eat at the same time as taking this medication will mean that your body can absorb as much of the active ingredient as possible. The medicine will not be as effective when taken with food. Take Pro-Banthine at the same time each day according to the instructions provided. If you forget to take a dose for any reason, do not take a double dose to make up for the missed tablet. Follow up with your next dose the next time you are due to take it.

What is the correct dosage of Pro-Banthine tablets?

The dosage of Pro-Banthine that you are recommended to take will be based on the condition that you are treating and the severity of your symptoms. The most common dosage is one tablet, taken three times a day during the day. You will also need to take two tablets together when you go to bed. This is the typical dose at the start of your treatment. However, you may need to later increase your dose to a maximum of up to eight tablets per day.

Each Pro-Banthine tablet contains 15 mg of Propantheline. You will need to ensure that you only take this medication for as long as you are prescribed it.

Does Pro-Banthine have any side effects?

While serious side effects with Pro-Banthine are not common, it is important to note that all medications can sometimes cause unexpected results. More often than not, the more common side effects of Pro-Banthine will occur when you first begin to use the medication, and your body will still be getting used to the new medication. The most common symptoms of Pro-Banthine are dry mouth, decreased ability to sweat, and dizziness. Some people taking Pro-Banthine will experience widened pupils, blurred vision, vomiting and nausea or even constipation.

While the side effects outlined above should not be dangerous, it is important to contact a medical professional if you are concerned that your situation is worsening, or the effects persist for an extended period.

In rare cases, Pro-Banthine may also cause some more severe side effects, including:

  • Sudden and unpredictable changes in your mood or mental state;
  • Pain or uncomfortable pressure in the eyes;
  • A fast or erratic heartbeat;
  • Difficulty with urination that persists for more than a day.

Tell your doctor if you experience any of the side effects above, or if you notice any symptoms after taking Pro-Banthine tablets that make you feel nervous or uncomfortable. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.

It is rare for patients to experience a serious allergic reaction when taking Pro-Banthine, however, you should seek immediate medical attention at a hospital or doctor’s surgery if you notice signs of an allergic reaction. You may be having an allergic reaction if you suddenly have an unexpected rash, itching or discomfort after taking a tablet, or swelling in the throat, face or tongue. Contact a doctor immediately if you have any trouble with breathing or severe feelings of dizziness.

When should you not use Pro-Banthine

Pro-Banthine is only available on prescription because some people will not be able to take this medication due to issues with medications that they are already taking, or problems with their medical history. It is important to answer all of the questions asked by your consultant truthfully when you are prescribed this medication. Make sure your consultant is aware if you are allergic to anything in this medication, including any inactive ingredients.

Before using this medication, tell your consultant about the details of your medical history, particularly if you have any history of glaucoma or a condition called myasthenia gravis. It may not be appropriate for you to take this medication if you have had disorders caused by blockages in the stomach or bowel, or difficult urinating in the past.

Avoid using Pro-Banthine if you have ever had or are currently suffering from:

  • Problems with your oesophagus like GERD;
  • Nerve disorders like neuropathy;
  • Breathing problems;
  • Ulcerative colitis;
  • Diarrhoea;
  • Congestive heart failure;
  • Heart or blood vessel diseases;
  • High blood pressure;
  • Kidney disease;
  • Liver disease;
  • An overactive thyroid.

This medication can cause some people to feel dizzy, drowsy, or as if they are unable to see as well as usual. Taking other substances like alcohol can worsen these side effects and make it harder to complete everyday tasks. You should limit your exposure to alcoholic beverages when using Pro-Banthine, and make sure that you do not undertake any dangerous activities when using this medication.

It may not be suitable to use Pro-Banthine when you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor or consultant advises otherwise. Make sure that any dentists or doctors performing procedures on you know that you are taking Pro-Banthine before treatment begins.

This medication actively causes a reduction in your ability to produce sweat. The body uses sweating as a way to manage your body temperature. To prevent heatstroke and other temperature-based issues, make sure that you do not become overheated during strenuous activities, in hot weather, or during exercise. Caution should be advised for people who are using this medication over the age of 60, as they are more likely to be sensitive to these side effects.

Does Pro-Banthine interact with any other medications?

Interactions between different medications can cause one or the other medication to react differently or unusually when they are in your system together. Your consultant must know about any other medications that you are taking before you request a Pro-Banthine prescription. Remember that you will need to let your consultant know about herbal medications and supplements as well as over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs you are taking.

Antispasmodic medications similar to Pro-Banthine may react poorly with this medication. You should also avoid antiarrhythmic drugs like quinidine and drugs that are intended for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Other medications that may not be suitable for use with Pro-Banthine include:

  • Corticosteroids like prednisone;
  • Belladonna alkaloids;
  • Digoxin; Nitrofurantoin, paracetamol, nefopam;
  • Drugs that require stomach acidity;

  • Potassium capsules or tablets;
  • Tricyclic antidepressants; domperidone, metoclopramide;

Ensure that your consultant is aware if you are taking other medications that may make you more likely to suffer from side effects like drowsiness. These may include opioid pain relievers like codeine and drugs for anxiety or sleep. It may not be suitable for you to take Pro-Banthine if you are currently using muscle relaxants or antihistamines at the same time.
