Pro-Banthine is a tablet prescribed to people with muscle spasm issues in the bladder and gut. The medicine will not be as effective when taken with food. Take Pro-Banthine at the same time each day according to the instructions provided. If you forget to take a dose for any reason, do not take a double dose to make up for the missed tablet. Follow up with your next dose the next time you are due to take it.

Before using this medication, tell your consultant about the details of your medical history, particularly if you have any history of glaucoma or a condition called myasthenia gravis. It may not be appropriate for you to take this medication if you have had disorders caused by blockages in the stomach or bowel, or difficult urinating in the past.

Avoid using Pro-Banthine if you have ever had or are currently suffering from:

• Problems with your oesophagus like GERD;
• Nerve disorders like neuropathy;
• Breathing problems;
• Ulcerative colitis;
• Diarrhoea;
• Congestive heart failure;
• Heart or blood vessel diseases;
• High blood pressure;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• An overactive thyroid.

This medication can cause some people to feel dizzy, drowsy, or as if they are unable to see as well as usual. Taking other substances like alcohol can worsen these side effects and make it harder to complete everyday tasks. You should limit your exposure to alcoholic beverages when using Pro-Banthine, and make sure that you do not undertake any dangerous activities when using this medication.

It may not be suitable to use Pro-Banthine when you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor or consultant advises otherwise. Make sure that any dentists or doctors performing procedures on you know that you are taking Pro-Banthine before treatment begins.

Interactions between different medications can cause one or the other medication to react differently or unusually when they are in your system together. Your consultant must know about any other medications that you are taking before you request a Pro-Banthine prescription. Remember that you will need to let your consultant know about herbal medications and supplements as well as over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs you are taking.

Antispasmodic medications similar to Pro-Banthine may react poorly with this medication. You should also avoid antiarrhythmic drugs like quinidine and drugs that are intended for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Other medications that may not be suitable for use with Pro-Banthine include:

• Corticosteroids like prednisone;
• Belladonna alkaloids;
• Digoxin; Nitrofurantoin, paracetamol, nefopam;
• Drugs that require stomach acidity;
• MAO inhibitors like procarbazine;
• Phenothiazines; disopyramide, antipsychotics, amantadine;
• Potassium capsules or tablets;
• Tricyclic antidepressants; domperidone, metoclopramide;
• Pramlintide.

Ensure that your consultant is aware if you are taking other medications that may make you more likely to suffer from side effects like drowsiness. These may include opioid pain relievers like codeine and drugs for anxiety or sleep. It may not be suitable for you to take Pro-Banthine if you are currently using muscle relaxants or antihistamines at the same time.
