Doctors prescribe Ibandronic Acid for the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis, also known as bone depletion. In this condition, more bone tissue is lost than created. As a result, the bones become brittle and can break more easily. The vertebrae also become weaker and may collapse. This can be accompanied by back pain, a curved spine and muscle, organ or nerve pain.

Osteoporosis occurs more often in the elderly. Women especially during or after the menopause are susceptible to a loss of bone density. This is because of the hormone changes: the decrease of the oestrogen leads to more bone tissue being broken down.

Other factors that can play a role in the development of osteoporosis are:

• Lack of sunlight (if you rarely go outside);

Ibandronic Acid is irritating to the oesophagus and can cause irritation. Take the tablet either standing up or sitting down, and don’t lie down for the first hour. This prevents the tablet from sticking in the oesophagus.

Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, the usual dose is as follows:

• Women during or after the menopause (for postmenopausal osteoporosis treatment): Take 1 Ibandronic Acid tablet of 150 mg once a month on a fixed day.

Ibandronic Acid can sometimes cause side effects. You may experience symptoms, such as:

• Headache;
